Why watch this film?

One of the most beloved and celebrated children's films of all time, 'Matilda' is that typical Afternoon Movie that everyone loves to watch and rewatch. Although it was a box office flop at the time, this written, directed, narrated, and co-starring Danny DeVito ('Batman Returns') adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic children's novel has become a cult classic, with a special place in the hearts of generations. 'Matilda' has a peculiar vision of childhood and its joys, inexhaustible as long as there is compassion and optimism that clearly its adult characters no longer remember. Some of its special effects, no doubt, seem dated to the 21st century audience, but they are part of the fascination in such iconic scenes as the chocolate cake sequence and the "hammer".
