A misunderstood and powerful female political figure's epic tragedy.

Why watch this film?

Though Nelson Mandela is the most prominent and globally recognized figure of his family, Winnie Mandela, his second wife, must also be highlighted. Member of Parliament from 1994 to 2003, and from 2009 until her death in 2018, Winnie exerted a strong political influence in South Africa during different moments of Nelson Mandela's life - she was the politician's wife when he was imprisoned until his ascension to the presidency. This good documentary by Pascale Lamche, winner of the Sundance Film Festival's directing award, dives into the different faces of Winnie, revealing previously unknown aspects about her political influence behind the scenes, her importance in Mandela's life and her years after the South African leader's divorce. An essential film to better understand the revolutionary movements in Africa against apartheid, showing that the fight for human rights went far beyond what surrounded Nelson Mandela.
