Why watch this film?
A hard and indigestible story, reminding us even more fatefully of the horrors of slavery. Solomon Northup had the chance to eventually tell his story, but there were millions who never could. '12 Years a Slave' is technically a perfect movie—deserving of the three Oscars it received. But watch the movie not because of that, but for all the stories that were silenced and can never be heard.

Directed by Steve McQueen (of the impactful '12 Years a Slave') and with a great screenplay co-written with Gillian Flynn ('Gone Girl'), 'Widows' is based on a 1980s TV series which, in Brazil, was broadcast as 'The Golden Ladies'. The feature-length version is an exciting thriller with several plot twists. Special mention for the great performances of the cast, especially the incredible Elizabeth Debicki and the always impressive Viola Davis (which earned her a BAFTA nomination).

'Shame: Guilty Desires' continues his unflinching visual style to confront the human condition in its most devastating form, through obsession with sex, as well as the way an addiction - and the resulting guilt - can consume all other aspects of a life into an unavoidable black hole. Carey Mulligan ('Drive') and especially Michael Fassbender dive into the darkest depths of the human psyche to lay it bare for the viewer, in a manner as disturbing as it is captivating.
