Through Ernesto's Eyes
One of the most sensitive and delicate films of 2020, 'Aos Olhos de Ernesto' starts off in a banal way: an elderly man meets a young and lively girl. From there, an unlikely friendship begins, as seen in dozens of other films, in which the two characters gain layers of development and progress in their lives. However, director Ana Luiza Azevedo does not let the tone of the film become mundane. 'Aos Olhos de Ernesto' hits the mark when it speaks of the loneliness of life, with a memorable performance by Jorge Bolani, who discovers and finds a new meaning for his life already in his 70s. The pace is slow and some viewers may get bored. Nevertheless, overall, it is hard not to feel affection for the characters, fondness for the story, and an immediate desire to sit down with your father or grandfather to chat.
Vai Dar Nada
"Stay calm, it won't be anything". This expression, used right and wrong in Brazil, is the title (and theme) of the comedy "Vai Dar Nada". Directed by Ana Luiza Azevedo ("Aos Olhos de Ernesto") and Jorge Furtado ("The Man Who Copied"), the feature film does not have a specific protagonist, but a very strong nucleus of peripheral characters. All of them live on the edge of crime, or even in the world of crime - ranging from robberies to the sale of stolen motorcycles. It is an "favela movie" in essence, but Furtado, Ana and the script by Guel Arraes ("O Bem Amado", "O Auto da Compadecida") try to put a lighter treatment, with a strong foot in comedy, valuing the characters and showing that there is joy, and not only tragedy, in the favela. Highlight for the good cast, with names like Cauê Campos, Katiuscia Canoro and Jéssica Barbosa, who know how to treat their characters in such a light and fun script.

But it would be a mistake to say it's just a female version of the first documentary. Through a select group of girls participating in a federal government simulation in Missouri, this film reveals, firstly, how American politics operates. But secondly, and more importantly, it explores how an environment supposedly empowering girls can both propel and limit them at the same time, raising questions about what we understand about power and the ways to exercise it.
Earth Protectors
Documentaries about the climate crisis are never too many, but sometimes it can be challenging to find one that presents its arguments in a different and memorable way. Earth Protectors is a worthy attempt. Directed by French artist and environmental activist Anne de Carbuccia, it artistically documents her 10-year journey around the world exploring the impact of climate change in various countries, as well as the solutions undertaken to empower global citizens and address the crisis. At times, de Carbuccia and her works take more prominence than necessary, but she manages to present vital information.
