In addition to dealing with scientific concepts and space travel very accurately, with breathtaking scenes, the feature film addresses deep topics such as existentialism, the evolution of technology and extraterrestrial life. We still feel the impact of this movie on world cinema today.
Barry Lyndon
Although it was not well received at the time, 'Barry Lyndon' is now considered one of the best films by master Stanley Kubrick, which says a lot coming from the creator of '2001: A Space Odyssey' and 'A Clockwork Orange.' Its more than three hours may be excessive for many nowadays, but it's still a fascinating drama about fate and ambition. Special mention goes to its innovative photography, with beautiful images that replicate the paintings of the era in candlelight, something very difficult to achieve.
Full Metal Jacket
It's the twelfth film by master Stanley Kubrick (and one of his most underrated), released after a long break of seven years following "The Shining". The movie is based on the semi-autobiographical novel "A Steel Vest" ("The Short-Timers") by Gustav Hasford, and it has an Oscar-nominated screenplay co-written by him, Kubrick and war correspondent Michael Herr, author of the book "Dispatches" (which also inspired Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now"). As such, "Full Metal Jacket" is one of the most brutal portraits that cinema has given of the psychological cost of war, best exemplified by the chilling scene with soldier Pyle (Vincent D'Onofrio) in the bathroom. Special mention to Lee Ermey's performance as Sergeant Hartman, who has inspired an entire archetype of how military personnel are represented in fiction.
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
With the Cuban Missile Crisis still fresh in memory and the paranoia of the Cold War at its peak, Stanley Kubrick dared to pose a hypothetical scenario: what would happen if the worst person possible had control over the worst weapon ever invented by humankind? The result is a masterful marathon of black humor that achieves something that would seem impossible: making us laugh at the scenario of our own nuclear war extinction. 'Dr. Insólito' (better known as 'Dr. Strangelove', its original title) is a satire set during the Cold War, but it is chillingly relevant even today. With performances worthy of a lecture hall (the brilliant Peter Sellers plays three roles in the movie and you'd hardly notice), this is another gem in Kubrick's perfect filmography, which has tackled war more than once from different angles, but never with such originality as in this one.
Eyes Wide Shut
Stanley Kubrick's last (and most controversial) film. Technically and visually flawless, with a story full of sexual appeal and mystery. Such a tumultuous production that it entered into the Guinness Book of Records as having the longest single continuous shooting period in movie history - 400 days. A lot is also theorized that Kubrick's death, just a few days after the completion of the film, was related to the themes denounced in the movie, referring to practices committed by Hollywood's high society.
The Shining
An adaptation - albeit with many changes - of Stephen King's book, 'The Shining' is one of Stanley Kubrick's masterpieces, featuring a remarkable performance by Jack Nicholson. When it was released, the movie was not well understood, but over time it became a cult phenomenon and has remained frightening to this day. Warning: The version on HBO GO is the European one, about 25 minutes shorter. On other platforms the movie is in its longer version.

Kidnapped
In Kidnapped (Rapito), Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio delves into one of the murkiest and most controversial episodes in the history of the Catholic Church, the "Mortara case". In 1851, when Jewish boy Edgardo Mortara becomes gravely ill, his Catholic nanny decides to baptize him in an emergency. However, papal law dictates that all Catholics must be raised as such, so the cardinal orders the boy to be taken and handed over to the church, against his parents' wishes, who decide to fight for him. The film recounts a controversial case that captured the attention of the rest of Europe and America, and skillfully portrays the clash of interests between the waning power of the church, Mortara's parents, and public opinion, with irreversible consequences for all involved.
Green Border
'Green Border' - In the treacherous and swampy forests that make up the so called “green border” between Belarus and Poland, refugees from the Middle East and Africa trying to reach the European Union are trapped in a geopolitical crisis cynically engineered by Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko. In an attempt to provoke Europe, refugees are lured to the border by propaganda promising easy passage to the EU. Pawns in this hidden war, the lives of Julia, a newly minted activist who has given up her comfortable life, Jan, a young border guard, and a Syrian family intertwine.
