Why watch this film?

Martial arts movies are often criticized for sacrificing narrative substance in favor of action spectacle. Ip Man manages to have the best of both worlds, even if it means cutting some corners with respect to historical accuracy, making it one of the best martial arts films of the 21st century and of all time. Donnie Yen is spectacular in this semi-biographical portrait of Bruce Lee's teacher, conveying the protagonist’s suffering during the Japanese invasion while wowing us with his physical prowess in demanding fight choreography worthy of a martial arts master.
