With 'Boyhood: Moments of a Life', the always innovative American filmmaker, Richard Linklater ('Before Sunrise') achieved one of the most ambitious and successful cinematic experiments of our time: matching real time with the time of film narration. The movie was filmed over twelve years (2001-2013), with a script written collaboratively on the go, to tell the story of twelve years in the life of a child, emotionally portrayed by Ellar Coltrane, whom we see growing and maturing before our eyes. It is an epic film in the proportions of its production, but extremely intimate in the scope of its story. Winner of the Oscar for Patricia Arquette's performance.

Last Flag Flying
A long movie with moments of lightness but with a dark and moving story about the obstacles that life throws in our way and how we overcome them with the help of our friends. Director Richard Linklater (nominated for an Oscar for 'Boyhood') is a master in terms of actor direction and this is made clear throughout the movie. Steve Carell ('Foxcatcher'), Bryan Cranston ('Breaking Bad') and Laurence Fishburne ('Matrix') are impeccable as three Vietnam War veterans who haven't seen each other for years and reunite for the funeral of one of them's son, killed in combat, in the Iraq War.
A Scanner Darkly
Based on the namesake novel by science fiction genius Philip K. Dick, 'A Scanner Darkly' is one of Richard Linklater's most ambitious films to date. With its very particular rotoscoping-animated visual style (it was digitally filmed and then "drawn" frame by frame), the movie offers us a desolate look into a drug-dominated future where surveillance and fear are enough by themselves to evoke paranoia and identity crisis.
Before Sunrise
Director and screenwriter Richard Linklater (who would later become known for 'Boyhood') takes a very simple premise in 'Before Sunrise': two strangers who bump into each other on a train in Europe and decide to spend the night together in beautiful Vienna. He (Ethan Hawke) is an American boy carefree with life, traveling aimlessly after getting dumped. She (Julie Delpy) is a French girl with certain ideals. From there, we fall in love with these two real characters, so believable, thanks to Linklater's accurate script, which leaves gimmicks aside and just puts Jesse and Celine walking through the streets, getting to know each other, falling in love and making the audience fall in love with this instant passion. It's hard not to sigh in some scenes that have already become classics of cinema, such as the averted looks in the record store or the imaginary telephone game in the restaurant. It's a simple movie, with great performances by Hawke and Delpy, that makes us travel not only through Austria, but also through the infinite possibilities of love.
Before Sunset
Melancholy and sublime, 'Before Sunrise' - the first installment of what would become the 'Before Trilogy' - became a successful portrait of modern love and youthful hopes, beautifully filmed and with intelligent dialogue. 'Before Sunset', written by director Richard Linklater and its protagonists Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, picks up the story of their characters nine years later: Celine has settled down in Paris, where she reunites with Jesse, who is now a novelist and is promoting his book there. With the same style full of dialogue and real-time events as its predecessor, the movie paints a more mature, melancholy, and reflective portrait of love, opening up the wounds left by loves that got away, and consolidating itself as the rare sequel that is as good or better than the first part.
Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood
He may get it wrong sometimes, but filmmaker and screenwriter Richard Linklater is one of the most authoritative voices in contemporary cinema. He plays with narratives (the 'Before' trilogy), visuals ('Waking Life') and even time ('Boyhood'). Netflix exclusive movie 'Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood' blends all of Linklater's innovations together. After all, the feature film is a mirror of the filmmaker's childhood, showing the impact of the Apollo 10 space flight on his life, and using the same animation technique as 'Waking Life' - plus plenty of conversation, as is customary in his narratives. Tailor-made for the filmmaker's fans, 'Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood' knows how to bring nostalgia to the screen without excessive nostalgia, and makes the audience think about their own journey.
School of Rock
Although it doesn't talk about a real rock band, it's hard not to think of the musical genre and not remember the beloved movie 'School of Rock'. An unusual foray of filmmaker Richard Linklater ('Before Sunrise') into a typical afternoon session production, this production is to be kept under lock and key in the heart. After all, just like 'Dead Poets Society', 'School of Rock' talks about the influence of a teacher - who isn't really a teacher in the end - on the lives of a group of young students. The rhythm is contagious, the children's acting makes a caress in the heart of the viewer and Jack Black has the biggest role of his career, along with 'High Fidelity', 'King Kong' and 'Bernie: Almost an Angel'.
Where'd You Go, Bernadette
"Where'd You Go, Bernadette?" is organized chaos. After all, it brings together director Richard Linklater ("Boyhood", "Before Midnight") and star Cate Blanchett ("Blue Jasmine") in the adaptation of the homonymous bestseller written by Maria Semple. The result is a bit uneven, but on the one hand it maintains some of that rebellious energy that characterizes Linklater's filmography; on the other, even though there was a lack of character development, the performances of the cast make this a very enjoyable comedy - and, for that reason, it ended up being worth a Golden Globe nomination for Cate.

Underdog
In its effort to raise awareness about the precarious social reality of certain sectors of the population, Mexican cinema tends to fall into miserabilism (or so-called "poverty porn"), whether in documentaries or fiction. The quest of Mexican cinema for new creative and narrative horizons is ongoing, and in the case of Underdog (Correr para vivir), director and co-writer Gerardo Dorantes opts for what, in its conventions, is an action and crime thriller extrapolated to the context of the Rarámuri (or Tarahumara) indigenous people of northern Mexico, famous for their running tradition (and their extraordinary talent for it). The plot follows two brothers: Omero (Vladimir Rivera), who dreams of being a runner; and Capó (Manuel Cruz Vivas), who is more talented but also troubled. Both are dragged into a life of service to the drug trade when Capó, in an attempt to provide for his pregnant girlfriend, fails in a cocaine delivery. To be honest, it's a good attempt to steer Mexican cinema towards other directions that are not the typical exploitation of social dramas or anthropological documentaries. However, the film ends up falling into the same vices, representing Rarámuri culture from a superficial and idealized exoticism, creating entertainment from a real social context with little sensitivity.
Downtown Owl
'Downtown Owl' - Searching for a break from her cosmopolitan life in Milwaukee, Julia Rabia (Lily Rabe), arrives in the closeknit Reagan-era town of Owl, North Dakota for a one-semester high school teaching job. But when the small town turns out to be a wonderland of second-string poets, smoldering Marlboro Men, and a social hierarchy that echoes high school, Julia doesn't know if she's come to town to get away from home or to find it. Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Henry Golding, and Finn Wittrock also star in this Great Plains dark dramedy directed by Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater. Based on the novel by Chuck Klosterman.
