Why watch this film?

Despite being a production of the acclaimed Studio Ghibli, this movie has rarely been seen outside of Japan as it was an exclusive television production. 'Umi ga kikoeru' was the first feature-length film of the studio directed by someone other than Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata -- in this case, animator Tomomi Mochizuki took the helm (known for directing the early episodes of the anime 'Ranma ½'). However, even though it stands out for being a product of a “third element”, it can be said that 'Umi ga kikoeru' is one of the studio's most mature animated dramas, based on the everyday life of young people involved in a love triangle, full of nostalgia, romance and frustration.
