Why watch this film?
Director Harmony Korine depicted poverty, misery, and antisocial behavior in what he calls the "American landscape" through a dark, absurd, and provocative humor in films like 'Trash Humpers', though with more recent works such as 'Spring Breakers' he has moved closer to traditional narratives. 'The Beach Bum' is another step in this direction, with Matthew McConaughey giving one of his most trippy performances yet, even if the script doesn't help him. The plot keeps its foot in the absurd, which may frustrate many viewers, but if you want to see something more original than the typical "stoner comedies" like 'Pineapple Express', you will appreciate this eclectic cast which also includes Snoop Dogg, Isla Fisher, Jonah Hill, Zac Efron, and Martin Lawrence.

A Brighter Tomorrow
Italian filmmaker Nanni Moretti (winner of the Palme d'Or in 2001 for The Son's Room) returns with what has been called his 8½, for obvious reasons. A Brighter Tomorrow is the story of a filmmaker struggling to shoot a movie about the Hungarian Revolution, while trying to save his marriage to his producer wife. The film satirizes the current state of cinema, and perhaps indulges a bit too much in its nostalgia. It is far from the best that veteran Moretti has to offer, but if you've enjoyed his previous films, you will undoubtedly enjoy this one.
