Why watch this film?

If there's anything more grave than the profound social inequality that exists in Mexico, it's the lack of empathy between social classes, particularly from the minority that makes up the upper class towards people of the lower class. This has been addressed many times in Mexican cinema in the form of comedy (‘Nosotros los Nobles’ is perhaps the most famous example), although it's less common to see it in satirical dramas. Such is the case with ‘Los muertos’, which pits spoiled youths from the privileged class, sunk in apathy and nihilism (a spiritual death in contrast to the piles of corpses left by organized crime), until the violent reality hits them full in the face.

Plot summary

It draws an anatomy of money as a force that imprisons and blinds its supposed keepers to the social and political reality that envelops them. It also shows the uncomfortable friction between the Mexico where nothing happens, and the Mexico in which too many things happen. The crux of this controversy leads to an unexpected accident which opens the possibility for redemption in the heart of Mexico's horror.
