Trailer

Why watch this film?

When Jesus was being judged by Pontius Pilate, a criminal was at his side. It was Varavva, a man accused of murder. The resolution of that trial, at that moment, seemed obvious. However, when Pilate was almost exonerating Christ, a twist: the people began to clamor for the condemnation of Jesus, a traitor to the Roman Empire. Pilate, in a historic gesture, washed his hands. And he followed the wishes of his people. It is on this story that 'Varavva', a Russian film, focuses, which deviates from the norm to talk about the time of Christ. After all, most of the time these stories are told in American productions always with the same types of actors in plasticized stories. Here, meanwhile, director Evgeniy Emelin brings abstract and very particular tones of his Russian culture to explore the life of this character as unknown as Varavva. Yes, there are serious problems of acting and production, such as a scene involving Christ descending from the heavens. But the Christian audience that seeks new visions on the history of religion will find captivating material.
