Why watch this film?
Based on Hayao Miyazaki's own manga of the same name, 'Kaze tachinu' is a biographical film with elements of fantasy and fiction, retelling the life of aeronautical engineer Jiro Horikoshi over several decades. It may be somewhat controversial to Western audiences, as Horikoshi was the designer of the legendary and deadly Mitsubishi A6M "Zero" warplane, used by the Japanese Empire during the attack on Pearl Harbor and World War II. However, being Miyazaki's last film before his temporary retirement, there is a palpable feeling of anti-war melancholy and a love letter to beauty that is often corrupted, victim of political or economic interests. Therefore, it is a movie that takes some liberties with historical facts, but it is a small price to pay. After all, once again, this is considered another masterpiece from the legendary animator and director, as well as one of the greatest animation gems of all time.

Castle in the Sky
This is the third animated feature film by Hayao Miyazaki and the debut work of now prestigious Studio Ghibli. And it was a sweeping entry. After all, 'Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta' is not just a beautiful movie in itself, with its poignant adventure story with steampunk influences. Somehow, it also captures the essence of future studio productions: high-level colorful animation to bring to life these beautiful childhood fables, hope, pacifism and the human relationship with nature and technology. An unmissable classic, whether you are a fan of animation cinema or not.
Kiki's Delivery Service
Based on the children's novel of the same name by Eiko Kadono, 'Majo no takkyûbin' is one of Hayao Miyazaki's stories that knows how to incorporate fantasy genre into a coming-of-age journey. All wrapped up in a touching tale about a young girl who learns to be independent and self-sufficient, yet still remain vulnerable.It may not be the most well-known movie of Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli, nor even the best of this good crop of Japanese productions, but you will still find the standard of narrative and animation quality of the other works of the studio.
My Neighbor Totoro
One of the most gentle and endearing films from Studio Ghibli and director Hayao Miyazaki, 'Tonari no Totoro' is one of those gems that deserves to be seen, revisited, and presented to children, nieces, grandchildren, and the like. After all, with the characteristic delicacy of Japanese studio films, here we follow the journey of two sisters who have to move to a rural house with their father, while their mother undergoes treatment in the hospital. From then on, the two interact with a creature of nature, nicknamed Totoro. It is a very emotional personal journey, full of sensitive and profound moments, although the narrative never compromises its childish tone and direction for younger viewers. It's hard not to want your own Totoro when the credits roll.

Spirited Away
Although Studio Ghibli has many acclaimed and beloved films, such as 'My Neighbor Totoro' and 'Princess Mononoke', none have come close to the impact of 'Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi'. Winner of the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, this Hayao Miyazaki gem mixes Japanese folklore and mythology with Chihiro's journey, a little girl who moves to the countryside with her parents. Powerful in its message and metaphors, the feature film does not spare itself from creating visual spectacles, memorable monsters and narrative jokes so that the viewer can not only passively watch Chihiro's transformation, but also feel it, understand it and internalize it. A mature film that should make sense to the older ones, hammering in their heads for days and days.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
Based on his own 1982 manga of the same name, 'Kaze no tani no Naushika' is only Hayao Miyazaki's second feature-length film as director. And though it wasn't produced by Studio Ghibli, the feature is forever associated with the company for introducing several of the marks that would define its later work. It's a fable of pacifism, with a striking steampunk aesthetic and a moral about coexistence of humanity with the natural world around it, beautifully animated, family-friendly, and essential for Miyazaki fans. After all, it was here that the groundwork was laid for the widely appreciated work to come, with classics like 'My Neighbor Totoro'.
Princess Mononoke
Movie with the most powerful message about environmentalism and ecology, 'Mononoke-hime' is an epic about the importance of protecting the environment. And to tell this, director and screenwriter Hayao Miyazaki takes advantage of the journey of the young warrior Ashitaka. Wounded in a battle against a possessed boar god, he will need to cross the lands of his kingdom, in a frequent war, to find the cure with the god of nature. However, as a good Studio Ghibli film, he will find a series of tests and messages throughout his journey, understanding and intensifying his teachings on cooperation, empathy and friendship. It is a brilliant movie, from beginning to end, and it should move those with hearts and souls a little more sensitive.
Howl’s Moving Castle
After the acclaimed animation 'Spirited Away' put Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli under the Western world's gaze, expectations rose for the renowned artist and Japanese studio's following works. Loosely inspired by Diana Wynne Jones' namesake novel, 'Hauru no ugoku shiro' further raised the bar for quality animation from Studio Ghibli, through computer-generated images which were later touched up by animators to give the appearance of hand-drawn animation. Though not as well-received as 'Spirited Away' or 'Princess Mononoke', the feature-length film remains one of Miyazaki's crown jewels, comfortably nestled in his filmography for also tackling the destructive effects of war and the courage and compassion needed to overcome them. Essential viewing for any fan of the director.
Ponyo
Inspired vaguely by 'The Little Mermaid', a story by Hans Christian Andersen and made world-famous by Disney's adaptation, 'Gake no ue no Ponyo' is Hayao Miyazaki's tenth feature film and his eighth with the world-renowned Studio Ghibli. This is perhaps one of the most underrated films of the acclaimed animator and director's recent filmography, but it is undeniable that this fairy tale is visually spectacular (something even more noteworthy, as the studio returned to hand-drawn animation), as well as extremely moving for audiences of all ages. A great experience to watch with children, nephews, grandchildren. A sensitive story for the family.
The Boy and the Heron
A decade after "The Wind Rises," animation maestro Hayao Miyazaki is back with another ambitious work from Studio Ghibli, also one of his most personal. Set during World War II, "The Boy and the Heron" is the story of Mahito, a boy who, shortly after losing his mother in a fire, moves with his father to the Japanese countryside, where he must adapt to a new life with his new stepmother, Natsuko, his mother's sister. Leading a solitary life, Mahito explores the surroundings of his new home, where he is soon drawn into a magical world by the presence of a mysterious heron. What follows is a tale even more rooted in surrealism than "Spirited Away" (which is saying a lot), in which Miyazaki explores so many ideas and opens so many doors that, at times, it may seem challenging to follow (or understand what he means by saying the film has autobiographical tones). It's the director's extravagance in its most radical and pure state, so perhaps not the best film to approach him with. However, for his fans, it will be another authentic delight to see the level of detail, ambition, and care in his animation, so tangible that it allows you to feel the consistency of a bed or the realistic movement of a liquid, all in service of a story that, despite its most hallucinatory elements, never loses sight of emotion.

Kidnapped
In Kidnapped (Rapito), Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio delves into one of the murkiest and most controversial episodes in the history of the Catholic Church, the "Mortara case". In 1851, when Jewish boy Edgardo Mortara becomes gravely ill, his Catholic nanny decides to baptize him in an emergency. However, papal law dictates that all Catholics must be raised as such, so the cardinal orders the boy to be taken and handed over to the church, against his parents' wishes, who decide to fight for him. The film recounts a controversial case that captured the attention of the rest of Europe and America, and skillfully portrays the clash of interests between the waning power of the church, Mortara's parents, and public opinion, with irreversible consequences for all involved.
Green Border
'Green Border' - In the treacherous and swampy forests that make up the so called “green border” between Belarus and Poland, refugees from the Middle East and Africa trying to reach the European Union are trapped in a geopolitical crisis cynically engineered by Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko. In an attempt to provoke Europe, refugees are lured to the border by propaganda promising easy passage to the EU. Pawns in this hidden war, the lives of Julia, a newly minted activist who has given up her comfortable life, Jan, a young border guard, and a Syrian family intertwine.
