Kruty 1918

300-like battle between Ukrainian students and Bolshevik army in 1918 Ukraine.

Why watch this film?

The Battle of Kruty was a real confrontation between the Ukrainian People's Republic and Soviet Russia in 1918, one of the most unequal armed conflicts in the 20th century, often compared with the Battle of Thermopylae between Spartans and Persians (better known by the movie and graphic novel '300'), although clearly under different circumstances and much less success. '1918: The Battle of Kruty' is a Ukrainian film that dramatizes (with some exaggerated sentimentality) the prelude to growing political and military tensions that led to the battle itself, spectacularly recreated. It is not an extraordinary war film, but it is ideal if you are in the mood for some heroism or if you want to know a bit about the lesser-known military history on this side of the Atlantic.

Plot summary

Ukraine, 1918. As a Bolshevik army of about 4.000 men, commanded by General Muravyov, advances towards Kyiv, with the aim of capturing the city, a small Ukrainian unit of 400 soldiers -about 300 of which are students- is resisting near the railroad station of Kruty. The clash between the opposite and unequal forces rages, with terrible fury. Young people, like Spartan soldiers, sacrifice themselves in a struggle against aggressors.
