Why watch this film?

The novel 'Emma' by Jane Austen has had several adaptations. The most famous in theaters was the 1996 version with Gwyneth Paltrow, which gave an unpretentious air to the story of the girl who wants to control the marriages of everyone around her. Not to mention the 1997 version with Kate Beckinsale, and a forgettable miniseries from 2009. Now, the classic story gets a modern reinterpretation under the baton of the renowned photographer and first-time director Autumn de Wilde. Drawing from the style of Sofia Coppola's 'Marie Antoinette', the film invests in stunning colors, scenery and photography to give a feeling of a story more in tune with reality. And it works. Protagonist Anya Taylor-Joy ('Glass') plays a detestable Emma, as in the book, but full of layers. Meanwhile, Mia Goth ('Suspiria') and Bill Nighy ('About Time') play comedic escapes with hilarious performances. Fans of bucolic adaptations of Austen's novels may be disappointed. You have to be open to new experimentation with these stories, which have reached a saturation difficult to surpass in recent years.
