Why watch this film?

Written and directed by Clive Barker, and based on his homonymous novel, 'Hellraiser' is the beginning of one of the most enduring supernatural horror sagas in popular culture, with nine movie sequels, novels, and even comics based on its universe. Although the acting and script are uneven, and the franchise itself has been discredited over time, this first installment achieved cult status for its original premise and aesthetics, at a time when the genre was distorted by constant and decadent sequels of 'Halloween', 'Friday the 13th' and 'A Nightmare on Elm Street'. The 'Hellraiser' universe dealt with several taboos around family life, marriage, abuse and, above all, sex and sadomasochism, and although it may not be very memorable for its human characters or plot, it is for its violent images and its unsettling "cenobites", extradimensional beings whose appearance is inspired by punk fashion, and whose obsession revolves exclusively around extreme sexual experiences.
