Why watch this film?

Drinking from the fountain of Anne Frank's diary, the tear-jerking Russian drama 'Voyna Anny' is one of those films that focus on the micro to speak of the macro. In this case, director Aleksey Fedorchenko (of the powerful 'Silent Souls') tells the story of a Jewish little girl, the only survivor of an entire family, who hides in a chimney during the Nazi occupation in Russia. It is one of those plots that appeal to the emotional without being ashamed of what they are. It is made to cry and move, displaying the pains of such a dark period in history. For audiences looking for something more, they can also find appreciation space in the harshness of the story, which never appeals to fantasy -- as 'Life is Beautiful' did, for example. Voyna Anny, at its core, is painful and heartbreaking. And it is hard not to be impacted, one way or another, with the life of this girl hidden in a chimney.
