Why watch this film?
Nicolas Cage is an angel. Not necessarily in real life, of course. But in 'City of Angels', a romantic feature film and one of the biggest successes of the actor's career. In the plot, he plays the role of a divine creature who falls in love with a weakened doctor (Meg Ryan). Obviously, the relationship begins to go through bumps and bring trials to both characters. Cage and Ryan don't have the same chemistry as Cage and Laura Dern (from 'Wild Heart') or Ryan and Tom Hanks ('You've Got Mail'). Something is missing there. However, the commitment of the two actors in their roles and the delicate direction of Brad Silberling ('Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events') help to give layers to the film and make it memorable -- mainly due to the controversial ending.

However, when he finally gathers the courage to confess, she falls for Billie Walsh, a handsome and athletic exchange student. The story is predictable and, except for a Netflix Sex Education-like layer of paint, there's not much new. However, it's a good contender for a Gen Z classic.
The Taste of Things
From Vietnamese-French director Anh Hung Tran (The Scent of Green Papaya) and starring the legendary Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel, The Taste of Things was France's selection for the 2024 Oscars, although it was not nominated. Set in 1889 and based on the character of Dodin-Bouffant created by Marcel Rouff, the story follows a chef (Magimel) enchanted by his cook (Binoche), for whom he feels not only culinary admiration, but genuine love. However, she is not ready to take the step into marriage and is happy and content with the relationship they have. Sensual in its visuality and narrative, it is a powerful story of love and about love, which, while not entirely breaking free from conventions, is elevated by the formidable talent of its protagonists.
