Why watch this film?

With He Got Game, go to director Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing) in his third collaboration with great Denzel Washington (Malcolm X), now in a more focused melodrama on the relationship between a father and his estranged son (portrayed by professional basketball player Ray Allen). The characters grapple with complex moral issues of integrity and family loyalty, facing a system that plays with the lives of the marginalized – generally the underprivileged – in favor of a few. It may be less belligerent than Lee's previous films, but it still offers a timely social commentary through a well-written and acted drama.
